Municipalities adopt local waste management action plans, a step towards an integrated waste management system 14 local government units in the Pelagonian and Southwest planning regions have successfully developed and adopted their local action plans for waste management (LAP), a step forward in promoting the Integrated Regional Waste Management System in the country.
These plans, developed by the municipalities and technically supported by SALAR International with financial support from Sida, indicate the collective commitment to improve waste management practices in North Macedonia. Since waste management is the responsibility of local government units in the country, LAPs represent efforts to ensure balanced, inclusive, sustainable and green development at the local level.
They give priority to activities such as providing waste services to as many users as possible, introducing a system for waste selection and collection of separate waste streams, as well as reducing the amount of waste that ends up in landfills, thus contributing to the achievement of national objectives for reuse, recycling, processing and prevention. In addition, they focus on raising awareness in communities about sustainable waste management practices.
The Ministry of Local Government (MLG), in partnership with the project "Sustainable Waste Management at the Local Level in North Macedonia", continues to work with local authorities in this planning region to promote efforts to improve planning practices for waste management in municipalities and strengthening their capacities to deliver high-quality services to all citizens, regardless of their place of residence.
